How Design Can Contribute to Your Success
Quorum’s interior design staff is energized! After working from home for more than a year, the team members are back together and inspired by their current projects. From a corporate headquarters for an international manufacturer to multiple animal shelters and couple of top-secret projects, they’re excited to wow clients with extraordinary creativity and out-of-the-box design solutions.
Clients recognize that interior design should enhance and contribute to their success. Effective interiors can attract new talent or new business, increase employee wellness and retention rates, and help define corporate culture and methodology, inevitably affecting profitability.
“Design impacts everyone,” says Principal, Karin Taylor, Director of Interior Design at Quorum. “Creating environments that positively impact lives is rewarding,” she adds.
Founded in 1992 by five architects, Quorum has long been known for their architectural services from master planning, design development and construction administration. In 1999, the firm began offering in-house interior design as an added service for architecture clients, but it wasn’t until Karin joined the firm six years ago that clients began to seek out Quorum’s interior design expertise, independent of architecture.
“Karin’s unique perspective and innovative approach to interior design has elevated the quality of projects the studio attracts. She’s also attracted some incredible talent to her team,” according to David Lee, one of Quorum’s founding Principals.
“Companies are rethinking how much space they need and how they want it to function,” adds Karin. “Some clients are downsizing or moving, and others are renovating existing spaces to appeal to a new different demographic.”
When Quorum moved into their new office in 2019, the design team set out to imagine how the space could influence the way the group works and interacts with each other. The results are breathtaking and continue to be a source of joy and pride for the company.
Project Manager, Mario Valdez says, “I love Quorum’s new offices, in part because we were able to preserve the original 1930’s elements, including the clerestory nave that provides amazing natural light.”
When Muckleroy & Falls tapped Quorum to design their new office in 2020, the client took cues from Quorum’s office. They wanted a space that would provide staff a lot of flexibility and promote their culture of teamwork.
“They really understood the atmosphere we were trying to create, and they nailed it,” says Zack Muckleroy, President. “Our space encourages collaboration, and everyone enjoys spending time here.”
The design team guides clients through the development process after diving deep into the client’s mission, objectives, functions and needs. They strive to enhance the positive emotional connection that people feel to their workspace. Each client is unique, so each project is a new adventure with a new design destination.
“We are working with a client who wants his interiors to convey the interesting story of his company and product development. Natural elements and eco-friendly materials fit his company’s philosophy,” Karin says.
Another Quorum client wishes to occupy a portion of a historically significant building for their office and gathering space while the remaining space will be available for special events. Quorum is working with the client and the community to study how the building could best be utilized and will design the building accordingly.
“Our shelter clients want environments that allow animals to express healthy behaviors and feel inviting to staff and visitors,” Says Principal and Director of Animal Care Design, Kim Dowdy.
There is a move to bring the comforts of residential design to the commercial environment. The work-life balance and staff well-being is even more important to employers now than it was a year ago.
Karin says, “We work to provide environments that are inviting and comfortable, but equally important are places where workers can recharge or relax when they need refuge from the stress of the job,”
With every project, the designers excel at achieving each client’s goals within any given parameters or limitations. The team loves a challenge and says these boundaries just help to guide the design and variables toward a solution.
Karin adds, “Helping the client succeed is our goal, and a well-designed workplace where people want to spend time, creates many happy returns!”
